Discharge Screen Printing Ink

Discharge ink is a water-based screen printing system used to produce soft-hand prints on dark garments. During curing, the discharge chemistry reduces the garment dye in the printed area, allowing the natural fabric color or added pigments to become visible. Manufacturers generally position discharge systems primarily for 100% cotton garments.

Discharge systems may include clear or color bases, white inks, pigments, ready-to-use colors and activators. Because formulations differ, printers should always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for activation, mesh selection, curing and garment compatibility.

                                What Is Discharge Screen Printing Ink?

                                Discharge ink is a water-based textile printing system designed primarily for printing on dark cotton garments. Instead of relying only on a heavy opaque ink layer to cover the garment, discharge chemistry reduces the dye in the fabric where the image is printed.

                                Depending on the ink system, the discharged area may reveal the natural color of the fabric or replace the original garment color with pigments contained in the discharge ink.

                                Why Use Discharge Ink?

                                One of the primary advantages of discharge printing is its ability to produce a very soft print. Because the process removes or changes the garment dye rather than simply covering it with a thick ink deposit, the finished design can maintain much more of the original feel of the fabric.

                                Discharge Ink for Dark Cotton Garments

                                Discharge printing is best suited for garments made from dischargeable cotton fibers. Not every garment or garment dye will react the same way, so testing the actual garment before beginning a production run is important.

                                Garment construction, dye type, fabric color and manufacturing process can all influence the final discharged color and appearance.

                                Discharge Bases, Whites, Colors and Activators

                                Discharge ink systems are available in several formats. Depending on the formulation, a system may include a discharge base, discharge white, pigments or mixing colors, and an activator that initiates the discharge reaction.

                                Activation procedures and working life vary by formulation. Always follow the technical data sheet for the specific ink and activator being used rather than applying one mixing ratio or pot-life guideline to every discharge system.

                                Printing and Curing Discharge Ink

                                Proper curing is essential for both ink durability and the discharge reaction. Mesh count, ink deposit, dryer airflow, temperature and dwell time can all affect the finished print.

                                Because discharge inks are water-based, the printed ink must first release moisture and then receive the heat required by the specific ink system. Follow the manufacturer's recommended printing and curing parameters for consistent results.

                                Choosing the Right Discharge Ink

                                The best discharge ink depends on the garment, desired print appearance, color requirements, production equipment and shop workflow. Consider whether the system uses ready-to-use colors or a mixing system, the type of activator required, working life after activation, and the manufacturer's garment and compliance recommendations.
