Learn More About Screen Printing Blockout

            What Is Screen Printing Blockout?

Screen printing blockout is a water-resistant coating used to seal unwanted open mesh areas on a screen. It is commonly applied after exposure to repair pinholes, cover small stencil defects (pinholes), and prevent ink from printing outside the intended image area.

            When Is Blockout Used?

Blockout is typically applied after the screen has been exposed and washed out. Printers use it to correct small imperfections before production begins or to make quick repairs during a print run without having to remake the screen.

            • Seal pinholes
            • Repair damaged stencil edges
            • Block unwanted open mesh
            • Prevent ink leaks during printing
            • Extend the usable life of a stencil

How Is Blockout Different from Emulsion?

Although blockout shares many characteristics with screen printing emulsion, its purpose is different. Emulsion is used to create the stencil during screen exposure, while blockout is used afterward to repair and seal areas that should not print. Both products become water resistant after drying, making blockout an ideal solution for quick stencil corrections.

            Choosing the Right Blockout

Most blockout products are designed to dry quickly, resist plastisol and water-based inks, and wash away during the reclaiming process. Selecting the right blockout depends on your ink system, reclaiming process, and production requirements.
